2. Significance of the Title

The significance of the title is the boys at Devon are secluded from the war by this academy. They have found a separate peace within the school away from the war because of where the school is located. There is not really a hint of war at Devon but merely an illusion that there is a war raging. The boys use sports and other activities to drive away from the idea of war although the sports are there to prepare some of the boys for battle. Finny finds a separate peace when he creates the story that there isn’t a war at all. He made himself believe that the war was just a practical joke played by fat old men behind the scenes. Later he admits  the only reason he said that was because he couldn’t be a part of the war himself. Not being involved in the action of war was killing him slowly. He was going to stick by this story until he got an acceptance letter from any kind of branch in the war just so he can be a part of the war. Gene found a separate piece after Finny died. He no longer had that envy or competitiveness after Finny was gone. Everything evil about Gene died when Finny died and in this he achieved his separate piece.
